A security researcher was planning to demonstrate as to how an RFID tag can be cloned by just being in proximity with the badge. The researcher had to back out because of the pressure from tag makers. RFID tags are made use of by government agencies and companies to gain access to offices.
The cloning devices can be made with an investment of just $20 and can be purchased online. To clone the badge you just need to be in proximity with the person holding the badge. The device will help the companies reevaluate their physical access policies for employees.
According to Chris Paget, director of research and development at Seattle-based IOActive:
The device is a teaching tool. The whole point was to educate people to make better risk decisions when deploying RFID.
